why we ride

For me, I started riding while stationed at Al-Asad, Iraq. I was Sergeant of the Guard for my unit, and our guard shack was a mile from our TOC (Tactical Operation Center), and walking back and forth just was not working for me. So I found a mountain bike for sale and bought it. I thought I was in shape but soon learned while riding that I was not. But after a month I was zooming all over the place and discovered a Biblical site on Al-Asad, Abraham Oases. The only green spot on Al-Asad. It was great. I soon had other guys from my unit riding bikes, and on our off time we'd go exploring. Now I'm wanting to get into road racing.

I ride for fitness
I ride for both pleasure and for pain
I ride for sanity's sake
To purge the clutter from my brain.
I ride to overcome To feel victory's sweet embrace But this victory does not come From riding in a race.
Victory is achieved From the war that's waged within When Pain attacks and declares, "Surely, today I will win."
Days when Pain's words ring true And indeed He does prevail.
But there are those rare, precious Gemstone jewel of days When I steely eyed, declare my purpose Set my jaw and fix my gaze.
Days when I look Pain in the eye And welcome Him to come inside Internal struggle begins, suffering ensues The war rages on the ride.
Sore, lactic acid laden legs
Air deprived lungs burn like fire
But my stubborn will says,
"Not today, no way I give in, give up, or retire."
And when the ride is finished
There are no TV reporters, no cheering crowd
No flowers, no podium girls
No tifosi waving or screaming my name aloud.
There is just this strong, silent voice That crescendos from depths inside On those finest of days I say to Pain, "Today I win!" That is why I ride! —Todd Bradbury; Powhatan VA
I ride because there is no better feeling than flying past a car that is stuck in traffic -SSgt. Garcia
I ride to escape. Granted, when I return from where I left, have forgotten what I was riding from. —Jocelyn Robbins; Beaumont, Texas
And there are deflating times
When I give in to Pain and in defeat I fail
Because it's fun, it's hard, and it's peaceful...just like life! -Lars I
