The History

Andy Badham is fairly new to the motorcycle game. The Warwickshire based recruitment specialist was an ardent motorsport enthusiast for years, but he saw the light in 1998 and he successfully enrolled on an intense three-day course and then bought himself a BSA Super Rocket, from Jim Farrell's Birmingham based emporium. He later added a Triumph T110, which he restored and has since sold Simon Morton is a Detective Inspector, a self taught engineer and an ex-Laverda racer. What's more, when he...

Why Are There Different Types Of Bearing

Words and illustrations by Dave Flintoft Bearings permit smooth movement between two or more surfaces in either a rotary a shaft rotating within a mount or linear manner one surface moving along another . Bearings are anti-friction devices each having different characteristics. Motorcycle bearings are oil lubricated, the film maintained by either a pressurised pump system, or by virtue of grease squeezed into the bearing itself. Classic motorcycle bearings can be divided into two main types,...

Remembering Fritz

As a long term CBG reader I congratulate the team on the new look. The two race photos are superb and just right for framing however I notice there is an obvious mistake in the spelling of the late, great Fritz Scheidegger's name but what happened to passenger John Robinson's recognition Looking more like a school teacher than a world champion sidecar racer, Scheidegger was a gentleman and always found time for fans, of which I'm pleased to say I was one. His death on 26 March 1967 the day...

Main Bearings

Taper bearings are not usually found as main bearings. Some Velocettes successfully use them, although these require precise setting up. Common practice for motorcycle mains is to use different bearings. Ball, roller and plain bearings bush to support the crankshaft. The drive-side bearings take a higher load than those on the timing side, so two bearings are often used, as per BSA B31 33, Gold Star etc. The cylindrical bearing takes the radial loads and a deep groove bearing locates the crank...

Cnd Laverda Disarmed

I noticed in the January issue, the caption regarding the orange Laverda on page 15. I did an article on this bike for the Ace Cafe Club Newsletter, after it turned up to our Italian Day. CND is reference to a small design and prototyping consultancy who had been appointed to design and build this retro styled cafe racer, utilising modern running gear with the possibility of a production run. The initial bike pictured in your magazine was completed and tested, but the project was shelved....
